Throwback Thursday - New York!

1

As it is a Thursday I thought I would throw it back to December when I visited the city that stole my heart, New York!

So many people fall in love with New York, so its not surprising that I did! Me and J visited in December for 5 nights, we packed winter clothes expecting it to be freezing at that time of year but New York ended up having a heat wave! We crammed as much food, sights and shopping in as we could, and now I am dreaming every day of going back!

Here's what we got up to!

Day 1:

We arrived in New York about 2pm but by the time we had collected our baggage at the airport and got a taxi to our hotel it was about 4. We dropped our bags off and headed straight off for an explore. We stayed in The New Yorker Hotel which is situated on the corner of 34th Street (shopping heaven). You could see the Empire State Building from our hotel, and it was about a 10 minute walk away. We walked around the streets near by to see what was around us and got a Starbucks (I know so cliche). We then headed to the empire state building as we wanted to see the view at night. OMG it did not disappoint! The minute I stepped out on to the floor I fell in love with the city! The bright lights, the noise, it was just an incredible feeling and an amazing way to start our trip. We ate dinner at a place called the Tick Tock Diner (we ended up eating here a fair bit) and had an early night. (so rock and roll)

Day 2;

Part of the reason we decided to go to New York on those dates was because it was my 25th Birthday and today was that day. We woke up super early like 4am! So decided to go on the hunt for coffee, FYI if you wake up with jet lag in New York I highly advise you to get up and go for a walk, there is something magical about the city at that time of morning, and it was another highlight of the trip for me. After some breakfast again at the Tick Tock Diner! (told you so) we caught the subway downtown for a helicopter ride we had booked. This was with Liberty City Helicopters and it was one of the most amazing things I have ever done, you fly above Manhattan and its just incredible and so worth the money! We went to Shake Shack for lunch, who have the most delicious burgers and milkshakes and just writing this is making me hungry! There was about a 15 minute queue to get in, but it's so worth it! We then went shopping, as mentioned above 34th Street is a strip of shops and has the biggest Maceys ever! But there is also loads of shops around Time Square and of course on 5th Avenue! After a busy day on our feet we went back to the hotel, I had a long soak in the bath before we headed out to the theatre! We saw The Lion King and OMG it was beautiful and amazing! Being a lover of musicals, I knew when I booked the trip I needed to see a show on Broadway, I picked something we would both hopefully like and although J claims he doesn't like musicals, he actually really enjoyed it too! Dinner was grabbing a McDonalds and taking it back to the hotel because at this point we were both exhausted!

Day 3:

The next day we had a trip to The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island booked, we got up early, grabbed a Starbucks (can you see a pattern here?)  and caught the tube Downtown. Unfortunately when we got on the boat we could't see the statue as we got closer like you are supposed to do, as there was a massive amount of fog! Our tour guide said it was the only time he had never been able to see the statue from the boat! (typical). We had tickets to go up the statue to the viewing deck. On the way up there is a museum about how the statue was built, which was pretty interesting! Luckily by the time we came back down, the fog had cleared, and we could see the statue clear as anything (phew) We posed for some pictures and then headed back on the boat to Ellis Island! Ellis Island used to be the gateway for immigrants coming in to the USA, it was so interesting to look around and learn about the history especially for J who loves history! In the afternoon we were meant to be going to the top of the rock but when we got there they said visibility because of the fog was zero and let us exchange our tickets for the next day! We grabbed some lunch at a place called the Melt Shop which we just came upon. They had literately the best cheese toasties ever, I had triple cheese and it was so so good! (heaven for a cheese lover like me) We had an afternoon of strolling around the streets, and found the Rockerfellar Christmas tree, before heading back to the hotel.
On the evening we went to see a basket ball game, something J really wanted to do but we both ended up loving it, the atmosphere was amazing and even though they lost, it was so much fun to watch!

Day 4;

We decided to try somewhere different for breakfast and went to a place called Applebees. I had pancakes and eggs and they were so tasty! They bring around coffee refills whilst you are eating which I thought was pretty cool, though I stuck to drinking tea! (so English). After breakfast we headed over to the 911 Memorial Museum, there is now 2 fountains in place where the towers used to be. It was interesting to learn of how the events unfolded on the day but very sad finding out how so many people lost their lives. We had a quick lunch of hot dogs and then headed to the Rockerfeller centre.
The Top of the Rock was so amazing, the view is spectacular, I particularly liked the fact you can see the whole of Central park! We stayed up their for a while as none of us wanted to come down! Afterwards we went to find some shops I wanted to see like Tiffanys and Bloomingdales! And then had a walk through the street of Manhattan back to our hotel! We decided to go out for dinner and went for a walk to find an american bar! We found a place not too far from the hotel, and ended up having margaritas along with our dinner, they were delicious. Afterwards we went for a walk to the Rockerfeller Centre to see the Christmas tree all lit up! It was so magical and just like Home Alone!

Day 5:

Our last day in New York so we had to do boring stuff like pack in the morning! As it was our last day, we both wanted one last meal at Tick Tock Diner, we had waffles, eggs and bacon, covered in syrup! (Sounds disgusting but it's so good). We headed to central park to have a walk around, as we were sitting down looking at the view, J pulled out a ring and proposed to me! I was completely shocked and over the moon! I of course said YES! I was so excited about the engagement that I wasn't as sad going home. We headed back to the hotel and got a taxi to the airport and said goodbye to the city I had fallen quickly in love with!

All in all my trip to New York was incredible and I cant wait to go back!
